What Qualifies as a Social Event?
This policy applies to any booking involving a planned social gathering β regardless of the booking category selected. A non-exhaustive list of qualifying Social Events includes:
Renters booking a space for a social event take on full responsibility for compliance with this policy, applicable laws, and the Host’s listing rules β for themselves and every attendee, vendor, and performer they bring to the space.
- You must clearly disclose in your booking request that the booking is for a social event, including the type of event, expected headcount (including vendors, performers, and staff), and whether alcohol will be served.
- Any material change to previously disclosed event details (type, headcount, alcohol service) must be submitted through the Platform for Host approval at least 48 hours before the event.
- You must receive express written permission from the Host before publicly posting the space’s address on social media, flyers, event listings, or any other public forum.
- You are solely responsible for determining whether an event permit is required and obtaining it prior to the event date.
- All signage and advertising for the event must comply with local laws and must be approved by the Host at least 48 hours in advance.
- You must comply with all applicable zoning, fire code, occupancy, noise, and health regulations for the jurisdiction where the space is located.
- You must comply with all rules in the Host’s listing, including capacity limits, curfews, and any activity restrictions.
- You are responsible for the conduct of all attendees, vendors, and performers from arrival to departure.
- Book sufficient hours to cover full set-up, the entire event, and complete clean-up. Do not arrive before your booked start time or remain past your booked end time.
- Respect neighboring occupants, building staff, and the surrounding community. Respond promptly to any reasonable noise or conduct concerns raised during your event.
Hosts who accept social event bookings take on specific obligations to ensure their space is properly prepared, their rules are clearly communicated, and they remain compliant with applicable laws.
- Clearly state in your listing whether social events are permitted, and specify any restrictions (capacity limits, curfews, sound restrictions, prohibited activities, insurance requirements).
- You may require proof of event insurance, permits, or a damage deposit before confirming a social event booking β disclose these requirements in your listing rules.
- Ensure your listing complies with all applicable zoning laws, HOA rules, lease restrictions, and local regulations before accepting social event bookings.
- Hosts facilitating social events in violation of local laws, condominium or homeowner association rules, or this policy may have their listing suspended pending investigation.
- If you accept a booking from a Renter who cannot obtain event insurance due to their location, you accept full liability for any claims arising from that booking and agree to indemnify Catalani Locations against any resulting losses.
Alcohol service at social events is permitted subject to the following requirements. Any booking where alcohol will be served must disclose this in the booking request.
- Age requirement: The Renter submitting the booking request must be of legal drinking age in the jurisdiction where the event is held (21+ in the United States).
- Personal consumption only: Alcohol served at Social Events must be for personal consumption and not for resale. Selling alcohol requires a separate liquor license β obtain one if required by local law.
- No service to minors: Neither the Renter nor any vendor may provide alcohol to anyone under the legal drinking age. The Renter is responsible for verifying attendee ages.
- Compliance with local law: If local regulations require food or non-alcoholic beverages to be served alongside alcohol, the Renter must comply fully.
- Permits: If a permit is required to serve or sell alcohol at the event location, obtain it before the event date.
- Residential spaces: Events where alcohol is sold (as opposed to served for free) are prohibited at residential listings. See the Residential Spaces rules above.
Hosts do not provide decor unless explicitly listed as an add-on. Renters are welcome to bring or rent decorations subject to the following rules.
- No decorations may be affixed to any surface using tape, nails, staple guns, push pins, adhesive hooks, or any other fastener that could cause damage.
- No physical alterations to the space β including painting, drilling, or installing fixtures β may be made without the Host’s express prior written consent.
- All decorations must be constructed of non-flammable materials.
- Decorations must not obstruct entrances, exits, fire escapes, emergency signs, elevators, stairwells, or fire lanes at any time.
- All decorations and rented equipment must be removed and the space fully restored before the end of your booked window.
Your booked hours must include the full time you need on the property β arrival, setup, the event itself, breakdown, and cleaning. Do not plan to arrive before your booking starts or stay after it ends. If you need additional time, extend your booking in advance through the Platform.
- Remove all decorations, equipment, rented items, and personal belongings before the end of your booking.
- Return all furniture, fixtures, and equipment to their original positions.
- Inspect the space at the end of your event to confirm its condition before leaving. Failure to do so may result in liability for damage claims you were unaware of.
- All garbage must be bagged and placed in designated trash receptacles. Break down cardboard boxes. Rinse recyclable containers before placing in recycling bins.
- If your waste exceeds the space’s available containers, it is your responsibility to properly dispose of the excess β do not leave it in hallways, stairwells, or common areas.
- No flammable or volatile materials may be placed in trash chutes or receptacles.
- Follow any additional waste disposal requirements specified by the Host in their listing rules.
Obtaining and maintaining appropriate event liability insurance is a requirement for all Renters hosting social events on the Platform where such insurance is available for purchase in the event’s jurisdiction.
- Your insurance policy must cover the risks associated with the planned activity and must name Catalani Locations and the Host as Additional Insureds.
- If the Host or Catalani Locations requests proof of insurance, you must provide it by the communicated deadline. Failure to do so may result in booking cancellation.
- The insurance policy details must be consistent with the information disclosed in your booking (event type, headcount, activities).
- Renters outside the US who cannot obtain event insurance because it is unavailable in their jurisdiction must disclose this to the Host at the time of booking. The Host has sole discretion to accept or decline such bookings.
Renters must comply with and enforce all smoking rules set by the Host in their listing. This includes cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, vaping devices, and any other smoking or inhalation products. Violations β including by attendees β may result in fines or fees charged to the Renter as an additional charge to the booking.
The growing, selling, producing, cultivating, distributing, or use of any illegal or controlled substances is strictly prohibited at any booked space. This applies to all attendees, vendors, and performers regardless of local laws or the nature of the event. Violations will result in immediate account termination and may be reported to law enforcement.
Strictly Prohibited
The following are absolutely prohibited at all Social Events on Catalani Locations, regardless of venue type, local laws, or Host permission. Violations trigger immediate action.
Catalani Locations enforces this policy actively. We monitor booking patterns for suspicious or high-risk events and respond to reports from Hosts, neighbors, and community members.
- Immediate cancellation without refund β applied when a booking is cancelled due to material misrepresentation or an active violation discovered before or during the event.
- Account suspension or permanent termination β applied for serious, repeated, or willful violations of this policy.
- Financial penalties β fines, damage charges, and additional cleaning costs may be charged to the Renter’s payment method on file.
- Legal action β Catalani Locations reserves the right to pursue or cooperate in legal proceedings against any Host or Renter who violates this policy, including referral to local authorities.
- Host indemnification β Hosts and Renters agree to indemnify Catalani Locations for all costs, expenses (including legal fees), and damages arising from violations of this policy.
